Pattern Translations

Pattern translations

Pattern translations are available from Norwegian/Danish to English, and from English to Norwegian for individual patterns and pattern collections that have previously been tech edited, either by me or someone else. I’ll use my tech editing background to make sure the translated instructions are just as helpful, clear, concise, correct and consistent as in the original version of your pattern, while also making certain we keep your voice throughout the translated version.

Your creativity and your way of expressing that gift deserves to reach as many knitters as possible.  I am here to work with you to make sure your pattern is as good and polished as it can be and help you reach a wider market.

I am very happy with the result I got and I now feel good about releasing an English version of my pattern. Thank you so much.

How it works

To learn more about the process and check for available openings in my schedule, please send me a copy of your pattern as a PDF file with any relevant additional information or questions you might have, and I’ll come back to you.

If you then want to proceed, you need to send me the pattern that is to be translated in an editable format in addition (like a Word or Pages document, preferably not  Google docs), any additional information I would need like charts, clear and detailed photos, and your style sheet if you have one. Including additional information about your vision with your brand and your design, and the intended market is also helpful when I translate, but not essential.

I start with reading through the pattern several times, and will then, if necessary, email you a list of questions or things I need to clarify before I start the actual translation. This is to be sure that there are no misunderstandings so that I do not unintentionally alter your pattern in any way. Due to the knitters’ expectations and the nature of how knitting patterns are written and worked in different parts of the world, adjustments to the original version are likely to be needed though. I will work with you on this, doing my best to make sure the pattern fits in with the “standard” in the target market, all the while making certain we keep your voice throughout.

The final translation is then further proofread and sent back to you within our agreed timeframe.

Invoice is sent within one week of completing/agreeing on the final translation.

And if you wish – I am happy to help spread the word and share about the release of your translated pattern on SoMe.

Price info

After reviewing your pattern, I will send you a free cost estimate for your project. The price for my translation services is based on the length of your pattern (actual word count in original version) and the extent of any associated work. Typically, this ends up somewhere between £50-200. It includes a final proofread by a native speaker.

Once the translation is done and sent back to you, I will send an invoice within one week of completion, with payment due within 10 days of date of invoice, either via PayPal or bank transfer.

Turnaround time

The usual turnaround time for translations is around 1-3 weeks. If you have a deadline that you are working towards, please let me know in the initial email or as soon as you know, to ensure that your pattern gets back to you in good time.
