Tech Editing Services

Tech editing services

Technical (tech) editing is a process where I will go over every detail of your knitting pattern from top to bottom, line by line, without altering it or changing the end result, to make sure the pattern is ready for publication. I do this by checking that everything is as correct, easy to follow, and consistent as possible so that your knitters should be able to work through the pattern without encountering any problems.

A tech editor does not need to actually knit the item, so having your pattern tech edited is a fast and efficient way of making sure your pattern works. I will help you create the best and most polished pattern that you can while being focused on keeping your unique voice as a designer and keeping the end-experience for your knitters in mind at the same time.

With a great design, and a well-written pattern that is easy to follow and understand, you will have happy and satisfied knitters that are more likely to turn into returning customers.

Your design is your vision and your baby – I will never alter your design or your pattern, only highlight errors, inconsistencies and clarity issues, and give suggestions. It is up to you to implement the corrections, as well as the suggestions as you see fit.

My tech editing services are available in Norwegian and English.

Working with Janne on my first ever knitting pattern has been an absolute delight, I couldn't have wished for a better tech editor. As a novice designer, I was quite nervous about the whole process, but Janne's friendly and professional approach put my mind at ease, and made the whole process feel like working with a best friend. With an amazing attention to detail, she made sure that the pattern was clear and concise before publishing, with helpful suggestions where it could be improved, and her wealth of advice on pattern writing process and publishing has been invaluable for a new designer. I can wholeheartedly recommend Janne as a technical editor and I look forward to working with her again on my next design.

How it works/workflow

To learn more about the process, get a free quote for costs, and check for available openings in my schedule, please send me a copy of your pattern as a PDF file with any relevant additional information or questions you might have, and I’ll come back to you.

If you then want to proceed, you need to send me any charts I would need, all gauges, clear and detailed photos, your style sheet if you have one, and information on what sizing standard you have used if relevant. I will then start working on the first edit within our agreed timeframe and send it back to you. I highlight and annotate, I do not alter your pattern.

You, the designer, then make the corrections and implement any suggestions you see fit, and send it back to me again for another edit. This second edit is to verify the corrections and make sure we have not missed anything. Sometimes this is all it takes, other times more back and forth is needed to catch everything. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you need or discuss your pattern with me at any time during our process, and I’ll do my very best to help and support you.

Invoice is sent within one week of completing/agreeing on the final edit.

There is an optional quick complimentary final proofread after test knit and right before you publish your pattern. And if you wish – I am also happy to help spread the word and share about your new pattern release on SoMe.

Janne always provides peace of mind with her tech editing services. She goes above and beyond with exceptional communication that makes the entire process quick and easy providing crucial feedback that makes your pattern flow flawlessly.

Price info

After reviewing your pattern I will send you information about how much it will cost should you decide to proceed. The price for my tech editing services is based on the length and complexity of the pattern, i.e. whether it is an accessory or a simple garment, the number of sizes/charts, whether it has a “standard” construction or not, if there are multiple stitch patterns or step-by-step tutorials, whether you have a style guide or not (or at least a clear idea how you want to write your instructions and have been fairly consistent throughout), and so on.

The price is a flat fee, so you do not have to worry about any potential additional costs later in the process. It includes all necessary edits for that pattern and a final complimentary proofread after test knitting and right before you publish your pattern if you so wish. It also includes proofreading of the grammar and spelling in the copy if necessary. Typically this falls somewhere between £25-120 per pattern.

Once the final edit of a pattern is done, I will send an invoice within one week of completion, with payment due within 10 days of date of invoice, either via PayPal or bank transfer.

Turnaround time

Turnaround time for the first edit is generally 3-10 business days.

As someone fairly new to the world of knitwear design, I was not entirely sure I NEEDED a tech-editor just yet. But lately, I had noticed that I was wasting a large amount of my own (and my testers') time on silly, avoidable mistakes - and that, despite me checking each pattern a hundred times. I know we've all heard it one time too many before - 'designers cannot tech-edit their own patterns' - but how true this statement is, I realized only after working with Janne @pineforestknits on several of my patterns.  Not only is she the nicest person and an absolute joy to work with, but she is also knowledgeable, detail-oriented, meticulous, and thorough. A patient but relentless perfectionist (and I mean this in the nicest way possible! 🙂 ) - she will not 'let go' until your pattern is the best version it can be! Throughout the entire process, she aims to preserve your vision and will remain considerate of your preferences and design choices. An experienced knitter herself, she can see both sides of the coin, and her advice has been very valuable to me. Some of her suggestions have touched on things I would not even consider on my own, prompting me to implement things that improve the ease of use and accessibility to end-users of all skill levels. I am really happy to have found her and hope to work together with her on many more future projects! 🙂  If I was unsure before if I needed a tech editor at all, now, I don't know what would I do without one. Thank you, Janne, for not only making my patterns better but helping me to be a better designer!
